This week I’m co-hosting a Book Review Blog Hop with Karen @ Dinosaur Superhero Mommy. I love to read. Next to writing and spending time with my family it’s my favorite past time. I’m still holding out hope that one day professional reading will be an actual paid career. But for now I’m content to sip my coffee and review all the beautiful books that find their way into my mailbox and the pile beside my bed.
Today I’m sharing a little bit of what I’m reading and looking forward to hearing all about your latest reads.
Litfuse and David C Cook sent me a copy of 7 Family Ministry Essentials: A Strategy for Culture Change in Children’s and Student Ministries
in exchange for an honest review.
Dr. Michelle Anthony and Megan Marshman take a hard look at how they have been doing family ministries and how it has and has not worked. They offer insight into transforming people’s lives with the gospel rather then creating more programs.
I’m still soaking in all they have to say. This book is a perfect addition to my toolbox as the Director of Family Ministries at First Presbyterian in El Paso. It leaves me with questions: How are we as a church empowering the entire family? Are we engaging every generation in the gospel story? I believe the answer is yes but we can do better.
Ministry is not about moral training. We’ve all learned to fake it. For those of us who have been around the church it is easy to spurt out the “sunday school answer.” This book is about going deeper. The power of God in our lives is not about living morally. It is about living in fellowship with our creator, trusting the Holy Spirit to work in and through us, and desiring (not obligation but a deep want) to live in His will.
At First Presbyterian we are taking some steps to more deeply engage and pass on the love and fellowship we share with one another and Christ. One of the ways we are doing this is by implementing Godly Play into our curriculum this coming year. I can’t wait to see how it impacts our families and how becoming engaged in the gospel story transforms children’s lives!
I have quite a few friends stacked up in my reading pile. If you’ve been following this blog lately you know I have a new obsession with Cynthia Ruchti’s work. It started with As Waters Gone By (another book sent to me by Litfuse), then Tattered and Mended, an interview with Cynthia Ruchti, and soon to be read They Almost Always Come Home
.
It’s your turn!
