Finding Joy in Everyday

I have spent the last 24 hours surrounded by amazing men and women. I’m soaking in everything I can at the #USAADigiMil Convention in San Antonio and can’t wait to apply all I am learning. The speaker lineup has been such a treat with guests like Tara Cooks - Army Wife Network, Ellie Kay- America’s Family Financial Expert, Kelly Perdew- Moonshots Capital, Angela Caban, and Briana Hartzell (and those are just a few and just yesterday! There is more today!). Then there are the people I’m just hanging out with, meeting in the lobby and grabbing a cup of coffee and some casual chats (to many to name- but I will get to them later on this blog promise.) Holding my breath and hoping a few of my new friends will link up today with their blogs and podcasts.

Like nearly every other person I know, I love the fall season. Pumpkin everything, cooler weather, and festivals fill our days. This year I’m excited to be participating in the planning of a Reformation Fair taking place on October 24th at First Presbyterian Church of El Paso. I’m learning more every day about the reformers. I am thankful for the freedoms they have afforded me in pursuing theological studies and I am excited to share that love for scripture and church history with the children of our church, particularly my own children.

Being married to a man who gets me is one of my greatest joys in life. We’ve had our share of ups and downs. We’ve fought over the normal finances and how to raise kids. We’ve hit the extra bumps of childhood cancer and deployments that have taught us to survive over long distances. Even in the moments where we’ve wanted to give up, we’ve pulled each other through. There is no one else I would rather go through the ups and downs with.

This week I’ve had the opportunity to speak on: our hearts and intentions, community, and God’s mercifulness. Each of these are important steps in pursuing authentic joy.
Having a heart after God’s own heart leads us to share our Creator’s love. Being part of a community gives us a support system when things get hard and gives us an outlet to help others and grow with them along this journey. God’s mercifulness gives us the grace necessary to walk this journey even when we screw it up. Authentic joy is something we build slowly, something developed and crafted over a lifetime.
Join us this week and share how you are pursuing joy in your life.

Joy is such a funny little thing. It’s a tiny word with so much anticipation and meaning packed in. Our stories slowly emerge and in the midst of them sometimes joy is hard to see. I had the opportunity this week to share with My Journey of Faith Magazine how God wrecked me. It’s a story of the life I set out to live for Him, but the journey He required of me.
