Day 3 of #MilesApart: WHY STUDY
Since this short devotional for couples lays out why do it in the first place I thought it would be a good one to let you take a peek at.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. - Hebrews 4:12
A few years back I was having a fairly difficult day with my then 4-year-old son. My cousin asked if she could take him for a drive. While she was driving around the neighborhood she shared Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” To which he responded, “I really wish you hadn’t told me that, I was better not knowing.”
How often do I approach God’s word in this same manner? How often does the spirit convict my heart and I groan wishing I did not know and could continue in blissful ignorance?
This verse about honoring your father and mother is part of the larger 10 Commandments. We memorize these and treat them as though they are a set of rules to live our lives by. But they are so much more. These commandments begin by highlighting our relationship with God. They set out how to interact with Him and flow into the commandments that teach us how to interact with one another. Our faith, how we interact with God, should naturally flow into our works, how we interact with others. Our works showcase our faith.
God has not given us these commandments so that we will live in guilt. We have been given these commandments so that we may live a life to the fullest. A life that brings us closer to God and closer to one another.
When you make the commitment, as you have with this study, to explore together what God has revealed through Scripture you are taking an active step towards strengthening your relationship.
Prayer:
Following each devotional is a short prayer to be said individually. The following prayer is from day one.
Lord, help me to let go of past hurts. Help remove them from my thoughts during the course of this time apart. Instead, help me center my thoughts on all the reasons I do trust my partner and why we have intentionally chosen to do life together. Amen.
Dig Deeper:
Following the devotional and daily prayer is a list of resources. Many of the resources are free (blog posts, online sermons, e-books like this one), some are found on Amazon (marriage books, on-demand videos, and more), and over $150 worth of the products referenced are in the 2019 Ultimate Homemaking Bundle. The two resources I recommend on just day nine are worth $61.99. The bundle is currently available for $29.97. In it, you will find 104 products worth $2,294.37.
Oh, and did I mention my book, Finding Joy: The Year Apart That Made Me A Better Wife is also in the bundle!
At the end of every chapter is a section titled TODAY.
TODAY Day 5:
TODAY sit in silence and listen for God to guide you in any areas where you need to be more vulnerable with your partner. Start with the above prayer. Journal out your thoughts.
