The Hawaiian Staycation:
The island of Oahu is a popular vacation destination for many travelers from the mainland and beyond. However, for those that live in Oahu, there are so many things to see and do right outside your doorstep. Oahu offers a staycation for any budget. You can stay at a luxury resort, or keep low key and choose any number of campsites all over the island. With many hotels offering a military and a Kama’aina (local) discount, there are so many options in Oahu and the other islands. for those that live in Oahu, there are so many things to see and do right outside your doorstep. For my family, we don’t generally stay at hotels for our staycations. We like to plan fun things to see and do and go out and do them. We find it is easier on the little one. Giving him the comforts of home every day after some adventure is what allows us to get up the next morning for more fun.
There are so many scenic hikes to try. One is a beautiful Japanese temple nestled in the Ko’olau Mountains. Oahu is also home to over 125 beaches, and with water temperatures at 75-80 degrees year round, it is easy to understand why there is a big draw to the ocean here. These beaches include some of the best surf spots in the world! Perfect snorkeling spots, scenic kayaking and relaxing lagoons for children to play.
Oahu is also home to over 125 beaches Click To TweetTourist beaches get overwhelmed with traffic and make access difficult. Hawaii and the island of Oahu, particularly, has some of the worst traffic in the world. If you are pining to go to Waikiki beach and don’t mind the crowds too much, park at the Hale Koa and utilize the beach access from the hotel. You’ll have to pay for parking at the hotel, but this way is much more affordable and practically stress-free than trying to find parking elsewhere. (Who doesn’t want stress-free!) This is also a great location to catch the firework show every Friday evening.
Finally, I cannot speak highly enough about the Disney Aulani Hotel! Nestled in the beautiful Ko’Olina Resort, Aulani is home to a beautiful overlook of the lagoons, and near one of the most popular luaus on the island. If you decide not to stay at the hotel, it still offers so much for the family. From the character meal breakfast to a special Polynesian themed celebration each night, there is something for everyone at Aulani.
There is so much to see and do in Hawaii, you couldn’t even begin to scratch the surface in a weekend. Take your time in Hawaii, and enjoy all the beauty it has to hold, even the terrible traffic.

Who wouldn’t want a vacation in Hawaii!
I have wonderful memories of Oahu from my military days! I did the Rim Pack tour in 2004 and got to stay there for 2 weeks over the 4th of July holiday. I’d love to go back some day, there’s so much to do there and I haven’t gotten to see it all yet!
