I came into the blogging world with a creative writing background, not an analytical marketing mindset, or strong knowledge of SEOs. I learned the techy side of blogging with trial and error. I’ve now had this site up since 2012, which means there have been many lessons learned. I find myself looking at blogging mistakes that now need correction.
Since I first started, I’ve learned and applied:
- SEO skills to various client sites
- created more scannable copy on my site
- joined affiliate programs, a few of which no longer exist (even though the links are still up on my site)
- created giveaways
- wrote reviews and accepted free books in exchange for reviews
- created products and freebies
It’s time I go back and apply all I’ve learned to my site, not just my clients’ sites. But where to start?

How I’m tackling my blogging mistakes
Now I have a detailed to-do list, and I’m breaking it down into actionable tasks daily. Because I want to make additional changes to some of my older posts, I’m doing this the hard way. I’m diving into each to make the text more scannable and place freebies on every page, or nearly every page.
As a content writer, my website has become an active online portfolio of my work. I want to make sure each page reflects who I am as a writer today, the SEO value I can bring to the clients who hire me, and provide value to my friends who like to check in and see what I’m up to.
