Let’s be honest… some days this feels impossible.

Last week I shared with you a little about why I chose the phrase “finding joy in the everyday” as my tag line. Life often throws curve balls to our immediate happiness and unless we are leaning on a deeper joy we can sink quickly.

A couple weeks ago John and I loaded up the kids and took a crazy road trip to Denver, Colorado to visit his army buddy. Along the route we had planned to stop and have lunch with one of my close friends Judy. Everything was going as scheduled until suddenly 8 miles into Colorado we had a flat. Two hours on the side of the road meant that lunch with Judy would have to be cancelled in order to stay on schedule. I can’t even begin to tell you how disappointed I was.

Instead of dwelling on my disappointment in the middle of nowhere I decided to make an attempt to enjoy it, so the kids and I began to explore. We walked up and down a side road picking flowers, throwing rocks, chasing grasshoppers (avoiding snake holes) and just enjoying one another. I may not have spent the afternoon with my good friend but I had an amazing time with my children.

Finding the joy in the setbacks that we are given are sometimes difficult but they are worth it. Had I focused on what I was losing my children and I would not have made a wonderfully simple memory or enjoyed the beauty of God’s creation that was all around us.
