As I think on Eve’s story and the offer the serpent made her, my mind shifts to stories I’ve read and shows I’ve watched. This revelation that God is not sharing the whole truth, that He has lied, that what is truly in front of Eve is the ability to be on equal terms with God, to be like Him, and to possess His knowledge is a story we are all to familiar with.
Trust No One
I think of Loki and his pursuit for Zeus’ throne.
Of Metatron in Supernatural as he shuts heavens gates, rewrites the story as his own, and attempts to take the god-title for himself.
Of kings and rulers throughout history who refused to be held accountable by anyone and carved out their own path.
Of tricksters throughout Native American Mythology who teach the struggle between good and evil.
Of vampires and werewolves who have been cursed with the knowledge of good and evil and fight their nature.
What is ultimately lost in the garden is the innocence of trust. Never again will blind trust be a respected theme in literature or in life. The veil has been lifted and doubt has been thrown on the goodness of God. The goodness of the Creator who sheltered mankind from pain and death, who gave us a world as our playground, and allowed the choice to leave it all behind.
