News

Hope for the homeless in Tampa

Currently, there is a shortage of masks in the medical community, the senior living community, and the homeless community. Join the movement that has over 400 people sewing and donating masks to help stop the spread of the virus.

Volunteer to Sew Masks

Start by joining the Facebook page Masks for Medical Workers in Tampa Bay and viewing the Mask Tutorial page.

We need to know where you are located, if you need sewing supplies, if you sew or if you are willing to be part of the supply chain by picking up completed masks and dropping them off at designated locations. We are doing all of this with limited to no human contact along the way.

Please note that we are only working within the state of Florida currently, specifically within the Tampa Bay area.  If you’re outside this area, please feel free to submit, and we will contact you if we have opportunities in your area.

How You Can Help

Areas where your help is needed:

  • Volunteer to help with the fundraiser
  • Sew masks at home (sewing machine required)
  • View Mask Tutorials to see which masks have been requested of our group
  • Volunteer to be a drop-off point for masks or pick up masks at homes

Then, fill out the form below:

Sew Masks at Home

We are focusing on these two masks options You Tube Tutorial & PDF Facemask Pattern

While we will not turn away any of the masks you make us we do ask you to direct any questions regarding changes to the masks to the Facebook group. The two mask options shown before are widely accepted.

Who Will Receive These Masks?

Medical professionals and healthcare workers throughout the Tampa Bay area will be receiving these masks. We have a network of contacts who are letting us know how many they need and we are working to get them in their hands quickly! This includes Hospitals, ERs, and Assisted Living Facilities who have informed us of their need throughout the Tampa Bay area. As we get masks in the hands of these professionals we will be updating you as to where they went.

If you are a medical professional in need of masks (and in the area) feel free to fill out the form here and we will contact you.

Donate Supplies for Masks

Can’t sew but still want to help? We are accepting donations of sewing supplies, including:

  • 100% cotton, or cotton-blend, fabrics that are breathable
  • Elastic (ideally 1/4 inch but will accept others as well)
  • T-shirt yarn (example)
  • Metallic twist ties (to use for molding the masks around the nose) (example)
  • Thread

Where to drop off supplies

Brandon: 904 Homewood Dr., Brandon, FL 33511. Place in the drop off bucket on red front porch bench.

St Petersburg: 2317 2nd Ave N., St. Petersburg, FL 33713. Place in the drop box hanging on the gate.

Can I order supplies to be shipped?

Don’t have any of the above on hand but still want to help? We’ve setup an Amazon Wish List if you would like to purchase supplies, and would be very grateful for the assistance! Any items purchased from this list will be automatically shipped to our main drop-off location, where they will then be directed to volunteers who are sewing the masks.

Request Masks

Are you a health professional in the Tampa Bay area who is in need of home-made masks?

We know there’s a need, and we are working hard to help! We have had over 10,000 masks requested, and right now this means we need to temporarily pause accepting incoming requests in order to allow our volunteer sewers time to catch up.

We wanted to let you know so you can seek help elsewhere without having a long wait. A quick search of #millionmaskchallenge will lead you to other groups doing the same thing.

At this time, we expect to reopen the form on April 10th; please check back.
