What no one tells you about homeschooling is that everyday is only as fun as you make it.

Last Monday, when the rest of the U.S. was snowed in, we were pulling out our school books, front door wide open, enjoying the cool desert air.

While mom and dad were enjoying the rare cool weather there were three little frowns who had been praying for snow at the tip of west Texas and Juarez. So instead of sulking, we tossed our books back in the bins. We layered up on t-shirts, last year’s to-small sweaters, summer jackets and socks for our hands, grabbed a book for the road, and went north in search of snow.

An hour into the drive we cashed in our October Book-It coupons. Thirty minutes after our pizza-stop, cars began to pass us covered in snow. We were close. By 2pm we arrived in a deserted state park in New Mexico.

A hike, snow angels, a tiny snowman, and 45 minutes later my desert flowers were ready to call it a day. Dripping wet we made our way down the mountain to the Old Apple Barn where we filled up on Hot Chocolate, Apple Cider, Taffy, and Fudge. We took the long way home listening to Christmas music and enjoying the warmth of the setting sun.

So that was the day our kids prayed for snow and we took a snow day.

Now that Thanksgiving break has started for many of you what are you doing to enjoy it? Share in the comments below. We are doing school work to make up for last week’s snow day and any future snow days we may take 🙂
