Groovy boxes are a great addition to our homeschooling curriculum. Our budding scientist loves them. Groovy Lab in a Box sent us the Moon Dance Box in order to review and share it with you. I only wish I had discovered them sooner. I love this resource and more importantly so does our 3rd grader.
This summer we are emphasizing STEM in our activities. We don’t really take the summer off, we just add an element of fun and walk away from the worksheets and textbooks. How?In addition to Groovy Boxes this summer we have plans to attend a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Camp as well as a Science Themed VBS.
The Moon Dance box comes with everything you need to complete the projects inside. While the activities in this box and on the website are intended for ages 8+ our youngest had a lot of fun joining in with the activities while her sister recorded the work in the lab notebook. In addition to the box of supplies and the curriculum in the lab book you receive access to their Beyond…in a Box section on their website with additional activities and resources to dig in deeper.

How to use this resource in a group
Groovy Lab in a Box can be enjoyed individually; however, parents, grandparents, and friends can all be part of a STEM Team and engineer together. Having a STEMTeam encourages collaboration and strengthens abilities to work together … just like real engineers in the real world. Here are some STEM Team Job Titles and suggestions of how to organize your very own STEM Team.
Roles should rotate from each activity so each STEMist has an opportunity to be in charge of different tasks. In the event there is plus or minus one STEMist, roles can overlap.
Speaker: Makes sure everyone is allowed to offer their suggestions and design ideas. Makes sure the design team is working in tandem. Helps STEM Team resolve disagreements and ensures each STEMist has an opportunity to contribute to design ideas. Answers questions when the STEM Team presents final design to an audience.
Materials Manager: Gets materials for the group (from the box.) Makes sure everyone is using materials wisely, and tests the final design. Keeps track of the budget if there is one and tests the final design. Organizes clean up by assigning tasks to each STEMist.
Timekeeper: Keeps track of time for each stage of the engineering design process. Keeps everyone on task. Keeps track of time during Test It!
Recorder: Keeps track of data entry for Groovy Lab Notebook. Keeps track of any changes made to the design plan during Build It! & Redesign!, and records the results during Test It! Takes pictures and video in the form of a presentation to share with others who may be inspired to create their own STEM team and learn more about the Engineering Design Process!
I would LOVE to see this implemented in our own Homeschool Co-op! Perhaps making that happen is my next project. This box is an excellent resource and I can’t recommend it enough. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have and am already looking forward to future boxes in our mail!
